Claude Shannon: Tinkerer, Prankster, And Father Of Information ...
Shannon, who died in 2001, is regarded as one of the greatest electrical engineering heroes of all time. This profile, originally published in 1992, reveals the many facets of his life and work That Shannon is the one who, as a young engineer at Bell Laboratories in 1948, defined the field of information theory. With a brilliant paper in the Bell ... [ReadMore..]
Divergence Measures Based On The Shannon Entropy | IEEE ...
A novel class of information-theoretic divergence measures based on the Shannon entropy is introduced. Unlike the well-known Kullback divergences, the new measures do not require the condition of absolute continuity to be satisfied by the probability distributions involved. More importantly, their close relationship with the variational distance and the probability of misclassification error are established in terms of bounds. These bounds are crucial in many applications of divergence measures. The measures are also well characterized by the properties of nonnegativity, finiteness, semiboundedness, and boundedness.< > Divergence measures based on the Shannon entropy ... Information Theory | Mathematics | Britannica
information theory, a mathematical representation of the conditions and parameters affecting the transmission and processing of information. Most closely associated with the work of the American electrical engineer Claude Shannon in the mid-20th century, information theory is chiefly of interest to communication engineers, though some of the concepts have been adopted and used in such fields as psychology and linguistics. Information theory overlaps heavily with communication theory, but it is more oriented toward the fundamental limitations on the processing and communication of information and less oriented toward the detailed operation of particular devices. Interest in the concept of information grew information theory, a mathematical representation of the conditions and parameters affecting the transmission and processing of information. [ReadMore..]

With the fundamental new discipline of quantum information science now under construction, it's a good time to look back at an extraordinary scientist who single-handedly launched classical information theory Shannon defined the quantity of information produced by a source--for example, the quantity in a message--by a formula similar to the equation that defines ... From Classical To Quantum Shannon Theory
The aim of this book is to develop "from the ground up" many of the major, exciting, pre- and post-millenium developments in the general area of study known as quantum Shannon theory. As such, we spend a significant amount of time on quantum mechanics for quantum information theory (Part II), we give a careful study of the important unit protocols of teleportation, super-dense coding, and entanglement distribution (Part III), and we develop many of the tools necessary for understanding information transmission or compression (Part IV). Parts V and VI are the culmination of this book, where all of the tools developed come into play for understanding many of the important results in quantum Shannon theory. As such, we spend a significant amount of time on quantum mechanics for quantum information theory (Part II), we give a careful study of the important unit ... [ReadMore..]
