Astronomy - Galaxies And The Expanding Universe | Britannica
Einstein almost immediately applied his gravity theory to the universe as a whole, publishing his first cosmological paper in 1917. Because he was not well acquainted with recent work in astronomy, he assumed that the universe was static and unchanging. Einstein assumed that matter was distributed uniformly throughout the universe, but he could not find a static solution to his field equations. The problem was that the mutual gravitation of all the matter in the universe would tend to make the universe contract. Therefore, Einstein introduced an additional term containing a factor Λ, the “cosmological constant.” The new term provided Einstein almost immediately applied his gravity theory to the universe as a whole, publishing his first cosmological paper in 1917. A Closed, Expanding Universe In String Theory
We present a conformal field theory -- obtained from a gauged WZW model -- that describes a closed, inhomogeneous expanding and recollapsing universe in $3+1$ dimensions. A possible violation of cosmic censorship is avoided because the universe recollapses just when a naked singularity was about to form. The model has been chosen to have $c=4$ (or $\widehat c=4$ in the supersymmetric case), just like four dimensional Minkowski space. Neutron-Capture Theory Of Element Formation In An Expanding ...
The neutron-capture theory of element formation by non-equilibrium processes has been extended to include explicitly the effect of the expansion of the universe, and the resulting equations have been solved on an electronic digital computing machine. Inclusion of the universal expansion is found to require an increase by a factor of five of the density of matter chosen for the start of the element-forming process over that previously found necessary to represent the observed relative abundance distribution of elements in a static universe. The following physical conditions lead to agreement in the over-all trend of theoretical with observed abundances: the element-forming process is taken to start at \ensuremath{\sim}140 sec after the "beginning" of the universal expansion; at this time the temperature is \ensuremath{\sim}1.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{9}$\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K\ensuremath{\simeq}0.11 Mev, the neutron-proton ratio is 7.33:1, and the density of matter is \ensuremath{\ Neutron-Capture Theory of Element Formation in an Expanding Universe.
